Climate Extreme Indices Development and Web service
Project Code: CECS_1183
This project is available at the following levels:
Summer Scholar, Masters
Keywords:
R package, Web service, RShiny
Supervisor:
Dr Warren JinOutline:
Climate extremes have direct relevance to agricultural industries. We have developed a list of climate extreme indices in order to understand the impacts these extremes may have had in the past and the degree of adaptation that has been undertaken to reduce risk to these events, and developed an R package for these extreme climate indices.
Goals of this project
- Possible development of a flexible Climate Extremes Index (fCEI) to describe the ability of industries to respond and adapt to these changes via the extension of approaches to determine adaptive capacity
- Assess its ability using a few Australian case study industries
- Include and document it in the CSIRO R package
- Implement a Web interface to provide a service. There are a range of ways that R code can be interfaced via the web (http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#R-Web-Interfaces).
Requirements/Prerequisites
- Familiarity with the script language, ideally, R
computing language - Basic computation techniques such as PCA, ICA
Student Gain
- Software package development experience
- Stronger R skills, that will be valuable for future statistical data analysis or data mining
- Real world problem solving skills
Background Literature
- R free software for Statistical Computing
- U.S. Climate Extremes Index (CEI): Introduction
